Iceland legalizes gay marriage...and PM signs up!

Iceland Legalizes Gay Marriage, Prime Minister Marries Partner

Photobucket

We missed this awesome news: Iceland has not only legalized gay marriage this past weekend, but its Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir married her long-term partner on the day it took effect, making her the world's only national leader with a same-sex spouse:

Sigurdardottir, 67, married writer Jonina Leosdottir on Sunday, the day a new law took effect defining marriage as a union between two consenting adults regardless of sex.

The two had had a civil union for years and changed this into a marriage under the new law, which was approved by parliament earlier this month.

The new law was celebrated at a church service on Sunday, which was also the international day for homosexual rights.

Warm fuzzies! Sigurdardottir's statement about the new law was that it was a cause for celebration for all of Iceland, adding: "I have today taken advantage of this new legislation." Indeed.

News (?) about gay and straight married people

I'm not sure why anyone would think that gay couples would be significantly different from straight ones, but this article debunks the idea in any case with some demographic research. Interesting statistics.

Family values

I barely made it through the article about the family on holiday in Florida (boo, Florida) who was denied access to their dying mother/spouse because the moms were gay without weeping. This one is a wet t shirt video for sure.
If this doesn't convince you that we need marriage for ALL people who love, your heart is stone.

Why gay marriage matters...again

A real life example of how homophobia and power mix. While it's true that a legal marriage may not have thrown any doors open in this case, it surely would have stopped the craziness at the legal level.
This is an equal rights issue. Can you imagine debating whether women or blacks should be allowed equal rights? It's the same violation against a different group, and it is unfair, prejudiced and hurtful.
I recommend the article highly.

Vermont joins states with same-sex marriage

As yet another state begins issuing marriage licenses to gays and lesbians, Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream is marking the occasion in typically sweet fashion. They're renaming their "Chubby Hubby" flavor "Hubby Hubby" for the month.
